The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian - Sherman Alexie, Ellen Forney Listened to this book on tape on a road trip with my teenage grandchildren and we all loved it. It deals with very heavy issues with humor and a few shocks. It deals with bullying, death, violence, addiction, discrimination, friendship, hope, love and much more. A real winner!

A Civil Action

A Civil Action - Jonathan Harr This was a real page turner for the majority of the book. Near the end it stalled a little. So instead of 5 stars I give it a 4.5 especially since it is about real life and very relevant to today's corporate pillage of our world!

Bel Canto

Bel Canto - Ann Patchett This is a story of our humanity even in extreme circumstances. The writing pulls you in and though you long for a happy ending, you really don't want it to end! Pretty much like the characters in the story.

One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd

One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd - Jim Fergus An inside look at the shameful history of our country against the first people of this land. At times touching and brutal. Always the women make the difference.

Cutting for Stone

Cutting for Stone - Abraham Verghese For some reason I could not get into this book and put it down for awhile. I heard such good things about it that I started it over and I am so glad I did!!! It is fabulous. It is not to be hurried through. It is to be savoured at leasure for it is full of insightful observations and heart wrenching family relationships.

Flight Behavior: A Novel

Flight Behavior - Barbara Kingsolver A timely tale of the importance of living your truth, for yourself and the world around us.

Truth & Beauty: A Friendship

Truth and Beauty - Ann Patchett A truly touching emotional memoir of a complicated real-life friendship.

Six Out Seven: A Novel

Six Out Seven: A Novel - Jess Mowry Wow, this is a totally engrossing look at life right here in America for poor Black
kids. It portrays life brought down to the basics of survival yet the characters are
richly developed, loyal, thoughtful and couragous.

Angel Falls

Angel Falls - Tim Wynveen The writing in this book is just beautiful. It surrounds you with the story in simple descriptive phrases. The story is edgy and emotional and very sad.

Lisa, Bright and Dark

Lisa, Bright and Dark - John Neufeld This book makes a real connection to the reality of mental illness and how ordinary people deal or refuse to deal with it. Very eye opening.

Theodore Boone: Kid Lawyer - Audio

Theodore Boone: Kid Lawyer - John Grisham, Richard Thomas this book is the best book ever!!!! it has you wondering through out the whole book its kinda a mystery and somewhat funny...... it leaves you wanting more!!!! this is a MUST READ!!

The Birth of Venus: A Novel

The Birth of Venus - Sarah Dunant A totally engrossing human drama that takes place in a time of extreme fanaticalism and fear.

High Tide in Tucson

High Tide in Tucson: Essays from Now or Never - Barbara Kingsolver Barbara as always adds her own mind expanding perspective to many important topics.

The Casual Vacancy

The Casual Vacancy - J.K. Rowling A sad account of class division and attempts to make changes that seem woefully overmatched.

A Thousand Splendid Suns

A Thousand Splendid Suns - Khaled Hosseini The treatment of women as something less than human and equal in society is heartbreaking and infuriating!! An unforgettable read.

When She Woke

When She Woke - Hillary Jordan What a timely work! With the current assault on women's reproductive rights, this might just be a the world our daughters will have to live through. Unless we say no and demand that women be treated as equal citizens with full responsibility over their own lives.
